Cell Phone Tax by State Calculator
Wireless taxes and fees aren't small print — nationally they add an estimated 27.6% on top of the average phone bill, combining state and local surcharges with the federal Universal Service Fund (USF) fee. But that number swings wildly depending on where you live: some states add under 10%, while others add more than 35%. Pick your state below to see the real rate and what it costs you in dollars.

Why cell phone taxes are so much higher than sales tax
Wireless service is taxed like a "sin" category in most states — layered with 911 fees, telecom-specific excise taxes, universal service surcharges, and local franchise fees on top of ordinary sales tax. According to the Tax Foundation, the average wireless tax rate is roughly 1.8 times higher than the average general sales tax rate across the same states. A large chunk of that — currently a 13.36% federal Universal Service Fund fee — applies everywhere in the country regardless of which state you live in; the rest is state and local.

How to use this number
Once you know your real combined tax rate, plug the dollar amount (not just the plan price) into the "Monthly Taxes & Fees" field on the main cost calculator — that's the field most people underestimate when comparing a big carrier plan against a budget/MVNO alternative, since the two often fall into different rate brackets depending on how each carrier structures its line-item fees.
